A Tiger King sequel is coming to Netflix this year as part of a new true-crime lineup of documentaries to be released.
It’s not exactly clear what the focus will be for the new season of Tiger King, but Deadline understands that the filmmakers met with and spoke to Joe Exotic (aka Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage né Schreibvogel) a number of times in prison.
The first installment profiled wildcat owners with a focus on Exotic, the former owner of the G.W. Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma, who now is serving a lengthy prison sentence for crimes against his animals and his role in a murder-for-hire plot against his nemesis Carole Baskin.
Baskin confirmed in a statement that she will not be appearing in the new season.
“I don’t know how they put out a Tiger King 2 when Joe Schreibvogel’s in jail and I’m refusing to be played again. Rebecca Chaiklin (director of Tiger King) said she wanted to “clear the air” about what they did to me in Tiger King. I told her to lose my number. There is no explanation for such a betrayal and false portrayal.”
“If people really want to know how the horrific and unsafe conditions tigers endure in the U.S. was started, they should be demanding to see The Conservation Game film by Michael Webber. His film answers the important questions that Tiger King glossed over.”
Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin will reteam as directors and executive producers; Chris Smith and Fisher Stevens also will serve as EPs. It is being produced by A Goode Films Production in association with Library Films and Article 19 Films.
Goode and Chaiklin have remained connected with Exotic since he began serving his sentence. The pair previously has discussed how being behind bars has taught Exotic about why keeping wild animals in cages was cruel.
Exotic pleaded with former President Donald Trump to grant him a pardon and early release, but it was for naught. He did, however, score a win last summer when the court agreed to shorten his original 22-year sentence.
