Jimmy Kimmel Slams Jay Leno In Farewell to Conan O'Brien - Decider

Talk show host Conan O’Brien said goodbye to late night last night (June 24), wrapping his final episode of Conan on TBS. On his final episode, the ginger icon welcomed final guest Jack Black, who sent him off with a heavy metal version of Sinatra’s “My Way” (spraining his ankle along the way, too).

Among kind farewells from Stephen Colbert and Homer Simpson (!) was Jimmy Kimmel, a close friend and fellow host of O’Brien. Over at ABC, Kimmel had some sweet words to share in his goodbye to Conan on his Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“I also wanted to congratulate Conan O’Brien on 28 years of very, very funny late-night television,” Kimmel said. “Conan wrapped up his show on TBS tonight. You know, before Conan, I didn’t even know bears could masturbate.”

And in true remembrance of Conan, Kimmel went on to slam Jay Leno — an infamous enemy of O’Brien — and The Tonight Show drama.

“Anyway, here’s to Conan and Andy Richter and everybody involved with that show. We look forward to whatever you have planned next at HBO Max,” he said, continuing, “And I also want to say, congratulations to Jay Leno on his new time slot at TBS.”

The Tonight Show lore draws all the way back to 2004, when NBC famously promised The Tonight Show to O’Brien during contract negotiations. O’Brien was set to take over from Leno in 2009, but when the time came, Leno accepted a primetime slot ahead of The Tonight Show instead of leaving the network. Both Leno’s odd variety show and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien failed to attract desired ratings, so NBC execs swapped Leno back to the main Tonight Show slot at 11:35 p.m. and booted O’Brien to the midnight slot.

Leno didn’t defend O’Brien — in fact, he did quite the opposite, and only after O’Brien had seven months under his belt at NBC. So, O’Brien settled with NBC over breach of contract for $45 million and (after a seven-month TV ban that NBC worked into the payoff) took his comedy to TBS.

Kimmel has been a fierce defender of Conan ever since the debacle. Naturally, when he visited Leno back in 2010, Kimmel slammed the actions of the NBC host.

“I think the best prank I ever pulled was, I told a guy that five years from now I’m gonna give you my show, and then when the five years came, I gave it to him and I took it back almost instantly,” Kimmel said to Leno’s face on his own show. Later, he added, “We have lives to lead here! You have $800 million, for God’s sake, leave our shows alone!”

Leno has not been happy with Kimmel ever since the feud.

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c. Watch the full monologue from last night’s show in the video above.
