Prince Andrew wants to wear an admiral’s uniform to Prince Philip’s funeral despite withdrawing from the high-ranking Royal Navy position over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, according to a report Wednesday.
The scandal-scarred Duke of York, 61, requested that he be granted permission from Queen Elizabeth and senior officials to wear the military attire to a ceremony laying his father to rest on Saturday, according to the Daily Mail.
The royal matriarch, 94, is expected to make a decision by Thursday.
“People have opinions and there are ongoing discussions about the right course of action,” an unnamed source told the outlet. “The Duke of York is very keenly aware of Saturday’s funeral being a moment for the Duke of Edinburgh, [Her Majesty] and the nation. He has neither wish nor intention to distract from that.”
In 2019, Prince Andrew stepped back from all of his 230 posts — including the position of honorary vice admiral of the Royal Navy — after giving a disastrous TV interview about his ties to the late multimillionaire pedophile.
Andrew has been accused by one of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Giuffre, of having sex with her three times — including twice when she was 17 years old — which he has denied.
If the duke is not granted permission to wear the admiral get-up, which includes a ceremonial day coat with rows of lace on the sleeve, he will likely only be allowed to wear a morning suit with medals, the outlet reported.
Meanwhile, all of Prince Andrew’s siblings — Prince Edward, Princess Anne and Prince Charles — are expected to wear military garb to the event.
Prince Andrew’s request has not changed his decision to step back from the title of vice admiral, the unnamed source said.
“The Duke of York will do what is appropriate to the circumstances — he remains stepped back from royal duties,” the source said. “Speculation on what he may or may not wear is just that, speculation, and no matters of this nature have yet been decided upon.”
Prince Andrew joined the Royal Navy as a seaman officer and served from 1979 to 2001. In 2015, he was made an honorary vice admiral of the service.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment Tuesday night, saying only that “funeral arrangements are being finalized and we will announce them accordingly.”
